It is commonly used when microcontrollers like Arduino, Raspberry Pi, PIC etc. have to communicate with computers through serial communication. As USB has DATA lines D+ and D- that can be connected and routed by CMOS switches. The USB can be connected to many peripheral devices and has a very fast speed of data transfer also it is used with Windows, Mac or any other operating system.
This module supports various operating systems like Windows 8/7/Vista/xp/server 2003/200, Mac OS-X/OS-9, and Linux 2.40 or later. It comes with indicator LEDs: the power indicator, the indicator data reception, data transmission indicator. After the driver is correctly installed, the status indicator will be on, the sending and receiving indicators will flash when communicating, and the higher the baud rate, the lower the brightness.
On the other hand, Arduino and other microcontrollers work on UART data transfer protocol i.e. TTL logic level data transfer protocol only works on 0V or 5V logic levels. That is why we need a USB to TTL serial converter IC so that Arduino or any other controller which works on UART protocol can be connected to the computer. It can also be used to program and or communicate with a GPS/GSM module through AT commands. The module supports both 3.3V and 5V interfaces.

Pin Description
TXD: Connect to the Transmit Pin(TXD) of the Microcontroller. This pin is the RXD pin of CP2102 on board.
RXD: Connect to Receive Pin(RXD) of Microcontroller. This pin is the TXD pin of CP2102 on board.
GND: Should be common to microcontroller ground.
3.3V: Optional output to power external circuit up to 50mA.
5V: Optional output to power external circuit up to 100mA.
